Ilse Labuschagne is from South Africa and has always enjoyed a challenge. When she was 18, she discovered rock climbing and was hooked! When she’s not doing research in engineering and speech sciences, at UBC you will often find her hanging out on pieces of rock, desperately trying not to fall off!
She has over ten years of climbing experience, and has actively been involved in climbing communities. In Canada, many female climbers have discovered the joys of rock climbing, but when she started climbing in South Africa she was often the only female climber in what was very clearly a boys club. Ever since, she has been actively working to get females excited for the sport. She proudly climbs like a girl!
